Stuart Allen Wharton went to be with His Lord on the morning of December 15, 2020
at his home near Amanda after fighting a courageous 3 ½ year battle with stage-4
cancer. Stuart was born on September 4, 1963, in Lancaster, to Donald Buryl Wharton
and Ruth Ellen Wharton (Loy).
Stu graduated from Amanda-Clear Creek in 1981, and in 1982 enlisted in the United
States Navy, along with his Amanda High classmates Chip Elder and Jay Sandy. He
graduated from the Basic Enlisted Submarine School March 3, 1983 and became a
Plank Owner of the USS Georgia SSBN729, an Ohio-Class Nuclear Submarine, which
was commissioned on February 11, 1984.
In December of 1986, following his discharge from active Naval duty, Stu went to work
for the family business, Buckeye Products. He subsequently earned his undergraduate
degree in Industrial Technology from Ohio University (Lancaster and Athens) and in
2000 he became president of Buckeye following the July passing of Donald, a position
that he held until the present.
Besides serving in the Navy Reserves, where he earned his full military retirement, Stu
was a long-time member of American Legion Post 11, in Lancaster, where he served as
a past Post Commander and was a long-time Trustee. Stu was also a member of the
Fairfield County Voiture Locale #498 of the 40/8, where he served as the 8th District
Cheminot and Sou Cheminot, and was also a long-time serving Locale Correspondent.
Stuart was preceded in passing by his parents, Donald and Ruth; his paternal grand-
parents, Buryl Wharton and Anna Wharton (Moyer); his maternal grandparents,
Jennings Loy and Mary Opal Loy (Dennison); his cousins, Timothy Keller and Robert
Loy, Jr.; along with many aunts and uncles. He is survived by his brother, Terrance
Wharton, of Amanda, by his aunt and uncle, Carolyn and Daniel Wharton, of Amanda,
in addition to several loving cousins.
Heartfelt appreciation is extended to the staff at Fairfield Medical Center, to the staff
at The James, at Ohio State University, and to the entire staff at Heartland Hospice, of
Stuart's visitation will take place on Sunday, December 20, from 2-5 PM, at the Taylor Theller
Funeral Home, in Amanda. His funeral service will held at Floral Hills Memory Gardens,
on Coonpath Rd., on Monday December 21, at 1:30 PM. with Pastor Steve Hayes of
the Laurelville Church of God officiating, and Military Honors to be performed by
AMVETS Post 2256 Honor Guard, of Circleville.
In lieu of flowers, the family urges that donations be made to Heartland Hospice.
In accordance with State mandates, COVID Protocols including facial coverings and social distancing will be followed.
